Goal 1: Improve
Student Achievement
Brightwood
continues to make significant gains in reading and math on the SAT-9
Achievement Test. Additional reading and math resource teachers
have been hired. A variety of programs, such as "Reading Is
Fundamental," "Book It," and "Family Literacy
Nights," have been implemented to foster the development of
more efficient reading skills. Block reading and math periods have
also been instituted for fifth and sixth grades. Volunteer programs
capitalize on the skills and resources of volunteers from several
external organizations including Prime DC, Values First, Sidwell
Friends, and community-based churches.

Goal 2: Ensure
High Quality School Staff
On-going staff
development and graduate coursework are provided on new standards,
best practices, classroom management, assessment and instructional
leadership. Ninety-five percent of the Brightwood staff is certified
and teaching in the appropriate area of certification. Non-certified
teachers are enrolled in courses with local colleges and universities
to fufill the requirements for proper certification. New teachers
also receive weekly support from administration, mentors, and city-wide
peers.

|
Goal 3: Increase
Accountability
The Local School
Restructuring Team (LSRT) conducts surveys of staff, parents, community
members, and students for feedback on their respective perceptions
of the instructional programs and general operations of the school.
All teachers maintain student profiles and portfolios that are used
as diagnostic and prescriptive tools for instruction.

|
Goal 4: School
Restructuring, Decentralization, and Parental Choice
Monthly LSRT
meetings are scheduled to discuss and review identified goals and
practices. Brightwood's plan focuses on parent and community involvement,
improving student achievement, and increased technology use. To
enhance reading and writing skills, each classroom has been equipped
with two or more computers. An essential goal of the instructional
program was met with the acquisition of two science teachers, two
reading resource teachers, and two math teachers. The school has
increased the involvement of students in science and technology
instruction and projects.
